At the door of the ESC.Graz 2008These days I’ve been in Graz working with Reni Hofmueller in an audiovisual project about meteorits

Each year the Earth gains 40,000 metric tons of dust and meteors, but this is just the 0.000003 of one percent of her mass…

Reni is experimenting with sound and interferences, so we wanted her sound to activate meteorits falling over the Earth.

the work setup at the ESC. Graz 2008So we created a pure data patch that mixes different loops of meteorits falling and takes the audio input, analyses it, and chages the mixes and the video effects according with the sound.

In this image we can see the working set up, with the black debian box, the radio that feeds the line in with interferences to analyse, and the image of the Earth, produced by the PD patch (you can download it above).

We used Blender to make the meteorits fall on Earth, with some particles systems.

Then we mix the different videos with pdp mixes, like pdp_mix, pdp_add, pdp_mul, and move the values of the video (contrast, gain, etc) with the values we get from alanysing the sound. For the anaylisis we used fiddle~, that analyses the pitch and dB of the sound input, and pique, that reads the peaks of frequencies. Here a screenshot of the mixing mess, the messiest part of the patch:

Here a screenshot of the main view, were you can adjust the level of sensitivity to the audio input (always important when you work with improvisers)

Also a view of the frequency analyser here:
